EDRG 3344 T/R Star Trek & Communication

Is Captain Dathon's sacrifice worth it? Why?

I believe it was because he did all he could do to connect with Captain Picard. He was also very patient with Captain Picard. Captain Dathon wanted to open the door of communication between Captain Picard and his people and with the Tamarians. When Captain Dathon passed away Captain Picard was inspired by Captain Dathon's determination to create a friendship with Captain Picard. Captain Picard appreciated all that Captain Dathon had done for him, that he payed his respect to the Tamarian family, and thats all that Captain Dathon wanted was peace and to create a positive alliance with one another.

What did Captain Picard gain from this experience?

I believe he gained respect for Captain Dathon, and also how important communication is in a friendship or any type of relationship. He gained respect for Captain Dathon and showed that and related that to the Tamarians, by speaking in their language at the end. I believe he also gained a new perspective if ever in the future he meets other alien life that he will be careful and open minded to learn more about them and their language.

EDRG 3344 T/R Revised MGP Poem

“Mean germs be gone”

Don’t want to feel sick and blue

U can try a thing or too

Wash your hands right

Will keep the germs out of sight

Those yucky mean germs can really get on our nerves

Cough and sneeze into your elbow

And not at your fellow

Before you eat make sure to wash your hands

Sing two happy birthday songs and maybe do a little dance

Germs can be mean and scary

But to the contrary

You should keep them off of you

If you want to stay away from the flu

EDRG 3344 T/R Expository Revised

Hello everyone Happy Friday! :) My topic for my 2ND grade audience is Staying Healthy.

This format is coming from a teacher's point of view and what I plan on doing is creating a step by step on the appropriate hand washing process for the students.

I plan on creating this on a poster board then I will try to laminate it and I definitely plan on keeping so I can display in my classroom.

The topic of my poster board will be: HAND WASHING DONE RIGHT

It will say:

Do you hate getting sick?

Want to know an easy way we can prevent from getting sick?

Follow these easy steps to wash hands correctly?

*Wash hands in warm water
*Use soap and lather while signing 2 Happy Birthday songs!
*Very important make sure to get in between the fingers and under your nails.
*Also don't forget to lather around your wrists.
*Rinse and dry well with a clean towel.

Why is washing your hands so important?

UNINVITED GERMS are everywhere...

Did you know 1 in 3 people DO NOT wash their hands after using the restroom YUCK!

Hand washing can be fun by using colorful soaps (pic) and soaps with different shapes (pic).

Again this format will be a display in a classroom, and I plan on adding additional pictures and I might need to cut down the wording a little, but please I am up for any suggestions to improve my expository.

Thank you everyone for your help, have a wonderful weekend.

EDRG 3344 T/R Revised Narrative

My narrative is a short fiction story, which I am planning as my final outcome to have made into a book format with binding and with pictures.

Do not have a title yet to my book

Here is my revised narrative story.

“The time has come…Germ Buster’s we must visit the schools again and make sure all our students know how to take care of themselves,” Sanitize Sam said enthusiastically.

“He’s right,” said Healthy Heather. “They are saying this season is suppose to be our worse one yet, and it’s our job to make sure our children are ready this flu season. This Swine Flu can be scary!”

“She is right, okay we need to hurry, let’s go!” Clean Clifford said urgently.

Clean Clifford and his Germ Buster team knew it was important to let all the children know how important proper hand washing is.

A group of students were sitting in their class writing in their journals when all of a sudden the class grew windy and suddenly the Germ Buster team appeared.

“Hello students, it us your friendly Germ Buster team” said Clean Clifford.

The students were so happy to see their favorite germ fighting agents.

“Now boys and girls we are here because we want you all to be prepared for this flu season” said Sanitize Sam with a concern look on his face.

Next, Healthy Heather asked the students a question, “Boys, and girls we all know what germs can do to us…can someone tell us why germs are so harmful?” asked Healthy Heather.

One child quickly raised his hand and with confidence answered “ I can tell you germs are bad because they can make us very sick!”

All the children nodded their head and agreed.

Mrs. Apple who was the teacher asked her favorite Germ Buster team to explain to the students again how they can properly wash their hands.

The Germ Buster team began by showing the students pictures of what bad germs look like.

“Yuck, that’s gross!” one student said.

“This is what stays on your hands boys and girls if you don’t wash your hands properly” said Clean Clifford.

“We can beat these germ villains!” Healthy Heather said proudly.

“Yeah!” the class shouted with enthusiasm.

“Okay students let’s go over step by step the correct way to wash our hands,” said Sanitize Sam.

Sanitize Sam and the other Germ Buster agents showed the students how to wash their hands.

Suddenly appeared a magical sink and soap. Clean Clifford told the students “Okay first step rinse your hands off with water, then apply soap, and start to lather”.

“He’s right boy’s and girl’s, now wash your hands and sing two Happy Birthday songs out loud,” said Healthy Heather. “Let’s all sing together”.

The Germ Buster team and students all sang two Happy Birthday songs.

“Great job everyone, now once you are done grab a paper towel, and dry your hands, also use that paper towel to turn off the knob off, and then you can throw it away” Sanitize Sam told the class.

“Congratulations class we all know how to safely and carefully wash our hands” said the Germ Buster team with excitement.

What other important safety habits do you follow?

EDRG 3344 T/R Talking...

I believe talking is one of the most important factors to have in a successful classroom. Students need to feel that they can express themselves verbally and this also helps to establish social skills. I also agree talking is necessary for learning, and a few examples where we can integrate talking in our classroom is creating small groups. With about 3 to 4 students in each group this will help students take ownership in their thoughts and ideas. Also as we learned in our class lecture it is important for us as the teachers to discuss with the class for about 5 minutes then go back and allow your small groups to discuss for 5 minutes as well. Then allow your small group to share their thoughts with the class. Small groups helps build language proficiency and allows students to participate.

The next idea to integrate talking is to do read alouds. This will help with fluency, and also when reading a poem out loud the teacher and students can take turns reading each stanza. Next, what we can do as teachers as an activity for our students is allow them to create their next stanza for the poem, and this can benefit their writing skills.

Creating a reader’s theatre is another way to get students to comprehend, and again talking is a key factor in a reader’s theatre.

It is also very important to allow our students to present in front of the class at a young age, examples can be show and tell, or to present a oral report. This will benefit them when they are older to feel more confident when in front of the class.

Lastly creating any type of drama with a puppet character as an example can help with logical thinking, and it can also integrate language arts.

I also feel talking has helped me personally, because I feel comfortable when my teacher allows us to discuss and ask questions regarding their lesson. This is helpful because then I have a better idea and understand the lesson, therefore I feel confident discussing my thoughts to the class. It has also helped me when presenting in front of the class. When I first started college I completed a communications class, and that class was definitely very beneficial for me. Our classmates scored us individually and this helped me to see what I needed to work on as my weaknesses and what my strengths were. After completing my communications class, I felt much more confident presenting in front of the classroom.

EDRG 3344 T/R My Precious as Gold memory

Hello Everyone Happy Friday!

The memory I would like to share is my precious as gold memory, which was my wedding day which was also my nephew's 7th birthday which we were so blessed about as well.

I woke up on a beautiful Saturday morning with rollers in my hair from the night before, and I remember feeling excited and nervous at the same time. My mom helped me with my wedding dress and makeup, and I can still remember how tight my hair felt pinned up, but it had to hold up for my big day, I had tons of hairspray and bobby pins to keep it up. As I was finishing getting dressed I remember calling my husband at that time he was of course my fiancé and he sounded so calm and he made me feel calm after speaking with him.

Our photographer came to take pictures of us at home and as we were leaving. Till this day I am so grateful we hired a photographer for our wedding. To go back and see pictures from that day are so awesome, and they are a blessing.

A white limo picked us up and dropped us off at the church. As I walked in I went into the bridal room to pamper myself up again and my mother, and my maid of honor were there to keep me calm. As they left I remember waiting there to get ready to go to the entrance of the church doors and I took a moment to thank God for this day, and for my husband, and I said a prayer.

Finally the church coordinator gave me the okay to start walking towards her, and as I approached her the water works started to come down, I was so happy and when my special day was about to begin this was the day I waited for my entire life and I had the perfect man waiting for me at the alter. My ushers opened the door and then the music started. Our song came on from Brian McKnight “Love of my Life” and that was the song I walked down the aisle too. It was the perfect song. As I walked down the aisle I remember looking at my husband and he did have watery eyes as well. It was a special moment that I will never forget. I also remember smiling at all my guests that came to the church ceremony and feeling so grateful they were there to share this moment with my husband and I. My dad gave me away and I was so happy to be up there with my husband and our pastor, who gave a beautiful ceremony. After the precious vows were said and our wedding bands were blessed, we had a slide show played for our guests. The slide show showed pictures of my husband and I as children and then when we met to current. When the show was done there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd.

One moment I will never forget is when our pastor was having us repeat our wedding vows and when it was time for our “I Do’s” when it was my husband’s turn he said “I Do” too soon, and our guests started laughing, it was so funny, we were ready to get married and we were ready to be together for the rest of our lives.

My wedding was one of my precious gold memories, being blessed with my husband and be able to spend the rest of my life with him, is so amazing, and I thank God for our marriage everyday. I know I will continue to have precious as gold memories in the future and I pray my husband and I can experience those together on our journey.

Thank you for taking the time to read one of my most precious as gold memory.

EDRG 3344 T/R My Dream Vacation

Everyone deserves to take their dream vacation. My husband and I were anticipating this vacation for a very long time. We were very disciplined and we saved just the right amount of money to take our dream vacation. Our dream vacation was to a relaxing island in the Bahamas. Our island had the perfect beach house, with servers who would make us delicious dinners every night. When dinner was done we would have our evening body massages in the most perfect area, right on the beach, where at this very moment I can still hear the waves. We also had an adventurous side and we went snorkeling and surfing, and I am happy to say we can check off all these exciting moments from our bucket list.

When we arrived on our island I remember looking at my husband and we both had huge smiles on our face. We were so happy to be there, and enjoying this moment together. The water was clear, and it was the most beautiful aqua color. The sands were so clean, and our beach house was perfect. The interior of our beach house was designed with seashells decor and wick furniture. It was a very relaxing environment.

As soon as we arrived we changed into our swimwear and went straight to the beach. We put our snorkeling equipment on and jumped right in. The beauty of the ocean floor and its environment from the fish to the coral reef were breathtaking. The colors were so amazing, the fish tickled us as they swam next to us. The next day my husband and I attempted to surf, and I say attempted because we were not very successful. But we still had a blast.

We were there for two nights, and each afternoon we had the most incredible cooks come to our island and cook us delicious lobsters. We sat at our table located on the patio from our beach house and we enjoyed our great dinner. Looking out at the ocean and looking at my husband, I just thanked God for that moment. I was so blessed to be able to have this moment with the love of my life.

After every dinner we had the best body massages, which were given to us on the beach under a canopy. Being able to relax and let out all your stress was great for my husband and I. When we were on vacation and we didn’t think twice about money and how much everything was going to cost, because we had saved for a very long time, and it was worth every penny. We had the stone body massages and I can definitely say I will get another body massage, it is so great for relaxation.

This had to have been our best vacation ever, my husband and I will never forget the time we had. I encourage everyone to take their dream vacation because life is too short, and we need to make the best of each day. We were so happy to get away from our daily schedule and do something different, and that was to take our dream vacation.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to read my dream vacation, have a great weekend.

Thanks,

Iris Garcia

EDRG 3344 T/R Explain Writing Process

Good evening everyone! Hope everyone is having a great Friday so far.

Writing is a process, which consists of five stages. The first stage is pre-writing which I believe is the most important stage, because this is where you brainstorm, and can use a graphic organizer to think of the ideas and events to discuss in your paper. With pre-writing we can meet with our students and use this strategy to help them start their writing process. The second stage is drafting and this can consist of a rough draft, and it could also look like an outline. The third stage is revising and this stage consists of making any additions, or deletions. Revising helps to focus on sentence structure, and at this stage we can look for adjectives, and where we can possible elaborate, and change sentence structure if needed. The fourth stage is editing and at this stage can help us look for grammar errors. Although revising and editing seem similar I am definitely going to try to keep these two stages separate. Revising will help me focus more on the sentence structure and checking to see if I need to elaborate, where as the editing process I can only focus on grammar errors. Finally the fifth stage is publishing, and at this stage we take action with our writing, whether we publish it, send it out, give to our students, or to faculty members, with the final stage we take action.

Thanks everybody, have a great weekend.

Thank you,

Iris Garcia

EDRG 3344 T/R What are some examples of Pre/During/Post strategies? How do these strategies help students?

Good Evening everyone, Happy Friday!

I truly hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend so far.

This is a great topic to discuss, because we have so many multiple resources we can utilize to make from just reading a book to actually allowing our students to completely understand the book we are reading to them. Most importantly it is crucial that our students understand what type of book their reading.

I would begin with introducing the title of the book to my students. My first goal is to grab my students attention hopefully the characters in the book can be relatable to them. I believe that is definitely an attention grabber which could be my pre. Having a positive an enthusiastic attitude is also a plus to getting your students excited about reading. Another pre I would practice is discussing with my class what they think will happen just from looking at the cover of the book, I want their imaginations to start thinking even before we start reading.

During the process of reading the selected book I would also have a Book Box created for our book, and bring out the different characters from the book, so that they can make a connection with the characters presented physically in front of them to those in the book. I would also come to stopping points during my reading and again ask the class questions about what we have read so far and what they think will happen.

Once we are done reading for my post activities I plan on bringing these characters to life by allowing them to be involved in my other subjects, some how I would involve them in my science, social studies, and maybe even math. Maybe ask them if we were reading "If you give a Mouse a Cookie", during math time I could ask my students "How would the mouse solve this problem?" During writing time I would allow my students to empathize with the characters, and if any characters in the book were in trouble or needed help, I would ask my students how they would help, and how they could make a difference, and allow them to express that in their writing. Not only are they practicing their writing skills but also utilizing their social studies skills.

These strategies will definitely help students, because the reading needs to be implemented as much as possible. The students will have a better understanding of the events that took place in the reading by practicing a pre, during, and post. If done effectively and continually this will help them in the future.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to read my blog if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to let me know, I hope everyone has a blessed weekend.

Thank you,
Iris L. Garcia

EDRG 3344.TR "How do you learn?"

Hola everyone, Happy Thursday! :)

This is a great question to answer, because we all use different strategies when learning something new. Personally, I can absolutely say I use rehearsal, and organizing when it comes to learning something new. I clearly remember as a child when I had a spelling word test on a Friday, what I would do on a Thursday evening, is I would sit in my room, bring all my stuffed animals out, placed them in order on my bed, and yes I would pretend their were my students, and I was the teacher. At that time my parents had bought me the best gift ever...an easel. On one side it was a white board, and the other side was a chalk board. I would test my knowledge by talking to my "pretend students", and yes I know this is funny, but we all "played pretend" when we were younger. But, let me tell you why it really helped, I kept repeating and rehearsing my vocabulary words out loud, and the next day I would pass the spelling test, and most importantly I felt confident going into test day.

Another very important strategy I use is organizing. I believe for myself to succeed in class or on a test, I must stay as organized as possible. It especially helps when I'm studying, if I have all my proper notes, and homework organized it does help me when I go back and study.

I am also a aesthetic learner, to see something visual, for example a math problem, I can not be told verbally how to solve a math equation, I need step by step instructions on how to solve the problem. Visually seeing each step helps me better understand the why's and no's to a math problems, and especially math, it is already very difficult and intimidating trying to solve, but when you have a teacher giving you step by step help, it makes it that much easier.

Lastly I am also very intrapersonal which happens to be one of my strongest strengths. When I read, I enjoy reading to myself, and when I study I cannot listen to any music or have the TV on while I'm studying, I get easily distracted. I have learned to change my studying habitats so that I can become more successful in my classes.

Motivation is what keeps me going. I can say that I have more intrinsic motivation in me. I have the drive to want to succeed and do well, and most importantly the passion to complete school and get my degree, and I do not want to stop there, I want to keep going. The intrinsic motivation not only plays an important role in my education, but within my whole life, as a wife, working at my job, and being a good person to others. Positive motivation can be very contagious.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to share with me your experiences and hearing mine, until next time, I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend, see y'all Tuesday.

Good Evening Everyone Happy Monday!

I must say its another great day to be alive! I suddenly got this song in my head "Don't you be a grumpy when the road gets bumpy just smile smile smile be happy" I needed to hear that, thank you Lord.

I agree with everyone with Blackboard but I am just really breathing in Jesus and staying patient they will get that all fixed and ready in now time. I'm so happy I am not the only newbie to Texas A&M this is also my first semester here at the school, and Praise the Lord I love it. I'm just truly humbled to be back in school, I should be done with school by now, but I know the Lord knows the plans he has for me. Today was a long day I had work from 6:00am to 3:00pm then school from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, and the love of my life my husband surprised me this morning by packing me different snacks to get me through the day, he is a blessing in my life. I really look forward to this great class, and learning from Dr.Harris, and my fellow classmates. See everyone tomorrow!
